(Cushing, Okla.) Lion of the Day, John Fechner shared photos and talked about his recent trip to Africa where he experienced trophy hunting and some “amazing” sunsets.
Fechner and friends (Steve Crowder, Cushing, was one of those friends) traveled to a 5,000 acre ranch near Kimberly, in South Africa. where they were able to hunt animals such as the Wildebeest, Impala, Warthog, and Kudu.
“It made up for 20 years of bad elk hunting,” Fechner laughed.
Fechner said the entire hunting trip was choreographed by the ranch owners and professional hunter. “You never go off on your own,” Fechner explained. “And you shoot the animal they tell you to shoot and when they tell you to shoot – you shoot.”
Aside from the thrill of hunting what might be deemed “exotic” animals, Fechner said the terrain and beautiful sunsets were simply amazing.
“There were the plains, the bush and the mountains…and the sunsets…well look at them…they were amazing,” he said as fiery red and gold hues flashed across the screen.
Fechner was asked what is done with the bodies of the trophy animals, since many times the heads are mounted and the hides are made into rugs.
“Once they’ve been killed, the animals are taken immediately to be processed,” he explained. “Not one part of the animal goes to waste.”
“We learned some things about ourselves on the trip,” Fechner concluded. “It was a great experience.”
