(Cushing, Okla.) American Legion Post 108 held a dinner in celebration of the 92nd birthday of the American Legion on Tuesday, March 15th. It was on that date in 1919 that the first American Legion caucus was held in Paris by members of the American Expeditionary Force. Post 108 is one of the original six posts in Oklahoma. It will celebrate its 92nd birthday in November.
Honored guests included commissioners Tommy Johnson and his wife Ruth Ann, Jim Hogrefe and his wife Karen and Mayor Evert Rossiter and his wife Jean. Representative Lee Denney and Senator Jim Halligan were unable to attend due to obligations at the Capitol.
Mayor Rossiter presented the Post a proclamation in honor of the American Legion’s birthday.
The celebration also included Ladies Auxiliary Vice-president, Laura Lou Pierson leading members and their guests in singing America the Beautiful. Post Commander Jim Hunter gave a brief history of the American Legion and of Post 108. The oldest Post member, Charles Montanaro was given the honor of cutting the birthday cake. Montanaro is one of the few Merchant Marines in the state and the only one who’s been a member of Post 108.
