(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 19-year-old Yale man pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexting and raping a 13-year-old rural Stillwater girl whose mother alleged in a petition for a protective order that he posed as a licensed therapist and assisted in cutting the girl’s wrist.
Jarrod Patterson was sentenced Tuesday to one year in jail with credit for time served, followed by nine years of probation with conditions including registering as a sex offender, having no contact with the girl or her family, providing a DNA sample, forfeiting his seized electronic equipment, and paying court costs including a $960 prosecution fee.
Regarding the plea agreement, which Associate District Judge Stephen Kistler approved Tuesday, prosecutor Debra Vincent said in court, “This has been discussed with the victim and her family, though they are not here today.”
Patterson also pleaded guilty to violating a protective order on Feb. 17, the day after his initial release from jail on $15,000 bail; for that misdemeanor he was given a concurrent one-year jail term Tuesday. Patterson had been re-arrested on June 4 for failure to appear in court on June 3 and jailed on $30,000 bail.
In an emergency protective order petition, the girl’s mother had alleged that on Feb. 3, “Defendant was caught in my house having sex. My daughter’s phone has been confiscated and Payne County investigators have phone and have evidence going through Snapchat account and Instagram account that defendant has been manipulating and having sexual acts with my child.
“He has stated that he is here to help her and has posed as a licensed therapist to my daughter. He has stated that he would take care of me (mother) and that he has purchased a gun (pistol.)
“He assisted in cutting my daughter’s wrist and has told her to take medication, which I found, Advil, Tylenol and leg cramp pills, in her bedroom to kill herself with.
“She has admitted to trying to kill herself with his help and has had to spend nights in a behavioral center.”
Payne County Sheriff’s Investigator Rockford Brown wrote in an affidavit that the girl’s mother told him on Feb. 3 the girl “had recently been caught with a person, who she believed to be over 18 years of age.
“During the course of the investigation, I was able to determine that the unknown male was Jarrod Patterson, who was 18,” at the time, Brown wrote in his affidavit.
“During a search of (the girl’s) phone, investigators discovered conversations between (the girl) and Patterson that were lewd in nature; furthermore, these conversations discussed sexual acts and photos sent to (the girl) of Patterson’s erect penis The majority of these conversations had taken place on Snapchat,” the affidavit alleged.
At the Saville Center in Stillwater, during a medical examination with a nurse-practitioner, the girl “disclosed having sex with Patterson on multiple occasions from January 2021 until Patterson was caught at the residence in Payne County,” the affidavit alleged.
When Patterson was interviewed by the sheriff’s investigator at the Yale Police Department on Feb. 10, Patterson admitted “he had sex with (the girl), exchanged lewd photos and messages with (her), and knew (she) was 13 years of age during this time,” the affidavit alleged.
“Patterson told me he had been exchanging messages with (the girl) since approximately May 2020,” according to the investigator, who arrested him on Feb. 10 and transported him to the Payne County Jail.
