Downtown Cushing Mainstreet Director Rick Reiley gives an update on what is going on in downtown Cushing.

The community bulletin board in Downtown Cushing is now up and being actively used. Main Street has agreed to monitor it and oversee its use. No boxes will be allowed. There are spaces with metal clips to attach approximately 30 typing sheet sized notices. It’s being used and perused on a regular basis and looks to be a positive sign in dealing with the touchy situation of ugly boxes and signs scattered and abandoned on city street corners. The board will be cleared every Tuesday. The community bulletin board is in the 100 block of West Broadway in Downtown Cushing between Opal’s House of Bargains and Jolley Century 21 Realty.

I dropped into Becky Spire’s Beau Monde beauty salon on N. Harrison a while back and discovered that I can now find all sorts of Tupperware products there. Right next door Beverly Darling has recently opened Darling’s Tan and Tone.

Cushing Community Theatre is in rehearsals now for Dilemma’s with Dinner presented by Cushing Regional Hospital, Dodrill’s Museum has been receiving tour buses and school groups recently. On Oct. 23rd Oak Grove school will come for a visit. Another tour group coordinated by Karen Smith’s Tours of Tulsa will be in town via tour bus Oct. 30th to view to last remaining railroad coal chute in the state. (This is the tall piece of architecture just south of Ahrberg’s Mill). Many railroad enthusiasts find it of extreme interest. Speaking of bus tours – I recently participated in a local history tour given to the Chamber’s Tomorrow’s Leaders group. I provided some history and reminiscences to this group of about 20. We toured Old Town on Main Street, the Washington Heights area north of Main Street and the downtown area. This is a great program and this is a great group of youngsters intensely interested in their community and how it works. I commend all those at the Chamber who make it happen.

Joe Kennedy’s second and third story renovation project has begun, Farmers Market continues. The Festival in the Park entertainment showcase contenders will be rehearsing at Centennial Park stage on Monday the 29th at 3:30. The public is invited to attend to watch these performers go through their paces.

The Director of the Oklahoma Main Street Center, Linda Barnett, will be in town next Wednesday to attend the Oct. 1 DCMS board meeting and to speak to the group. She will take a tour of the area in addition to giving insight into developing a corporate sponsorship program to boost organizational funding. The DCMS membership drive wrap-up will begin next week as well.

There’s a lot going on in Downtown Cushing, with lots more to come. Come see us!
