Walter D. McCoy was born on December 30th, 1952, in Stillwater OK, to H.A. McCoy, and Ellen J. McCoy. He was the youngest of five children, and was raised in Topeka Kansas. He played basketball and baseball in school, and excelled as a catcher. Walter returned to Oklahoma for the oil boom in the 80’s and thoroughly enjoyed ‘the patch’.

In 1990, Walter started a new life, and through his example affected positive change in many people’s lives. He was a close friend of Bill W. On May 6th, 1991, Walter married Susy McCoy, and to this union four beautiful daughters were born. Walter worked as a traveling welder and a shop welder for many years and in 2005 began a second career as a professional truck driver and because of it was able to travel the country.

Walter had a gift for nature, animals and the outdoors. He was an avid dog lover and very proud of his Great Dane and Bulldogs; Sassy, Wallenda, and Pearl. Walter was also a softball enthusiast and spent as much time as he could watching and coaching his four daughters in the sport. He also enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle as often as he could.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Lee McCoy. He is survived by his sisters Ellen and Harriett McCoy, and brother Hough, “Hoot” McCoy, close friend and mother of his children, Susy McCoy, his four daughters, Hosanna, Naomi, Rebecca, and Zoe McCoy, and grandson Jaxton McCoy.

Walter had some sort of impact to every person he came into contact with. As a friend, coworker, coach, “grumpy old man”, father and grandpa, he was loved and cared for by many, and will be greatly missed. Walter passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones on the evening of June 11th, 2014. A public viewing will be held Saturday June 14th from 12 to 8, and Sunday June 15th from 1 to 6, at the Palmer-Marler funeral home in Cushing. A memorial service will be held at The First Christian Church in Cushing, OK at 2 p.m. on Monday June 16th.
