(Cushing, Okla.)  Volunteers of all ages from Cushing and the surrounding area came together for a good cause on Saturday at the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event at Harmony Elementary in Cushing.

It was the first time for the event in Cushing, but if turnout and results are any kind of indicator, it won’t be the last time.  Jerry Fore, chair of the Cushing event, told KUSH listeners last week, volunteer sign-ups had been more than anticipated and that extra stations had been added to accommodate the number.  He went on to predict the number of meals packed would exceed the target of 100,000.

Fore was right.

Three shifts of volunteers, working two hours at a time, were able to fill, seal and pack 108,864 meals to be shipped to help starving children around the world. The meals, packed on sight, consist of rice, dehydrated vegetables, soy and vitamins – a formula designed by food scientists to reverse and prevent malnutrition. The meals are then provided free to clinics, schools, orphanages, and refugee programs around the world.

The statistics are alarming – every day, nearly 6200 children die from hunger or hunger-related causes. With the help of organizations such as FMSC, those numbers have decreased from 18,000 in 1990.
