(Cushing) – A person of “significant interest” was taken into custody in Stillwater this morning in connection with a triple slaying in Cushing early this morning.

Robert Chad Barela was taken into custody by OSU police walking near the intersection of SH 51 and Western Avenue. Barela had reportedly left a vehicle being sought in the investigation at a Wal-Mart Store parking lot in west Stillwater, and had walked about two miles.

The investigation began at 5:21 when police say they received a call from an individual who reported there might be deceased people at a residence in the 800 block of East Moses. Cushing Police later identified the address as 814 E. Moses. Two officers responded to the address and found three people believed to have been murdered. Cushing Police Chief Terry Brannon say there were two adult males and an adult female found at the location.

Brannon says the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and State Medical Examiners officer were contacted to assist in gathering evidence at the crime scene. The names of the victims have not been released.

Brannon would not speculate on a possible motive, nor the connection between Barela and the victims.

During press conferences held during the morning, Brannon was asked about drug activity in the area, possibly even the residence where the homicides occurred. Brannon noted that there had been 2 methamphetamine lab seizures in the last two and a half weeks in the area, but would not confirm the address, or that any of the victims or the suspect were involved.

Brannon would not say what the cause of death was for the victims.

He began his 11:30 AM press conference at City Hall by emphasizing that no children were among the victims, as had been widely rumored.

Cushing Public Schools were on voluntary lockdown during the morning hours due to a person of interest still being at large. Schools were expected to return to normal status.

Video of the 9:30 AM press conference is available in the KUSH video section.
