A traffic stop this morning by Cushing police officer Carson Watts led to the arrest of Cushing resident Michael Dean Watkins, WM, 27, on a charge that he was in possession of two guns after having already been convicted of a felony.
Officer Watts stopped Watkins in the 500 blk N. Hough Street, after realizing the license plate on the car Watkins was driving belonged on another car. Officer Watts issued Watkins a citation for the license tag violation, and prepared to inventory the car prior to it being impounded.
During an inventory of the car, two guns were discovered in the trunk. Watkins was placed into investigative detention until his criminal record could be checked. When Officer Watts learned of Watkins criminal history, which included a prior felony conviction, he was arrested for possessing the two guns.
Officer Watts arrested Watkins and took him to the Cushing jail for processing. Watkins was booked into the jail on a complaint of possessing a firearm after a felony conviction. Watkins remains in the Cushing jail this afternoon.
Chief Terry Brannon Said, “This was another example of good police work on the part of Officer Watts. Watkins arrest and the removal of these guns from our streets continue to represent our commitment to a safe, livable Cushing.”
