(Perry) – In what was billed as one of the most exciting duals of the year, 2A returning State Champs, the Perry Maroons, manhandled 3A returning State Champs the Cushing Tigers. The final score, 54-18 did no reflect the excitement of atmosphere in always electrifying Perry Maroon Wrestling Gymnasium. Perry returned 10 state qualifiers from last years state championship team, while Cushing brouight back 5 state qualifiers. The Maroons had an advantage right off the bat with Cushing’s inexperienced lineup.
Cushing had only 3 wins with all scoring 6 points for falls. Karson Knight started the match off with a fall then the Tigers suffered a long dry spell before Kyle Knight scored a fall. Ty Fittje closed out Cushing’s scoring with another pin. That was the 18 points the Tigers scored, but the excitement was not over.
Perhaps the most exciting match of the night took place between Garrett Evans, and Fisher of Perry. The two have wrestled each other their entire careers, with Evans coming out on top most of the time. The match was tied at the end of regulation, and went to three overtimes before Fisher finally scored a point, and came away with a 2-1 victory.
The Tigers are coached by Jonathan Huseman, and will hit the road for the Bristow Tournament Friday & Saturday, Dec. 11 & 12.
