(Perkins, Okla) – A Perkins man is being held without bond in the Payne County Jail after an overnight shooting and 90 minute standoff with law enforcement. Payne County Sheriff R.B. Hauf says the incident began with a neighbor calling 911 about a man shooting a gun in the Piney River Mobile Home Park just south west of the Perkins City Limits.
Hauf says officers from the Sheriff’s Department, Iowa Tribal Police, Perkins Police Department, Stillwater Police Department and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol were dispatched to the mobile home park where an 18 year old woman was found with a gunshot wound to her upper shoulder. The woman, whose identity has not been released, was taken by ambulance to an air ambulance that had been deployed to an area away from where the incident occurred.
A search for the suspect began, and a deputy found the man, identified as Christian Payne, 18, hiding under a mobile home. Hauf says the suspect was armed with a .22 caliber revolver, and that a standoff ensued. After about an hour and a half, the suspect was talked out from underneath the mobile home, and was subdued with a taser.
He was transported to the Payne County Jail. Hauf says Payne may have been under the influence of alcohol.
The shooting victim is reported to be in intensive care at the OU Medical Center in stable condition. Hauf says that witness statements indicate she may have been an ex-girlfriend of the suspect, and the shooting may have been the result of a domestic disturbance.
Hauf says during the standoff, mobile homes on each side of the mobile home where the suspect was hiding were evacuated.
No other injuries were reported. Hauf says deputies were on the scene for several hours gathering witness statements and investigating the crime scene. The shooting occurred inside a residence at the mobile home park. The 911 call came in at 12:03 AM Monday.
Hauf says that Payne will face a variety of charges, including shooting with intent to kill.
