(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 21-year-old Stillwater woman accused of slapping a nurse in the Stillwater Medical Center Emergency Room on New Year’s Day has been ordered to appear in court on Feb. 3 when she can seek a preliminary hearing on a charge of assault and battery on a medical care provider.
If convicted of the felony, Jordyn Kathryn Bales, who was released from custody on $3,500 bail, could be given a two-year prison term and a $1,000 fine, court records show.
Bales had been arrested at 2:45 am on New Year’s Day at the hospital about two hours after police were sent to a house on a disturbance, Stillwater Police Officer Zachary Gulick wrote in an affidavit.
Bales’ friends said that after she attempted to get in her vehicle and drive away, “they intervened due to Jordyn’s level of intoxication,” the affidavit alleged.
“One of the friends stated when they took Jordyn’s keys from her that Jordyn then began punching them and pulling their hair. The friends stated that they used the pepper spray on Jordyn’s key chain on Jordyn to get Jordyn to stop attacking them.
“While the friends were explaining this to Officer Ballard and I, I observed Jordyn laying on the ground, spitting and yelling. I asked dispatch to send LifeNet to our location to tend to Jordyn. Jordyn would not communicate with officers or LifeNet personnel much and was still screaming out.
“Officers and LifeNet personnel had to assist Jordyn to get on the cot by picking her up off of the ground. Jordyn even attempted to strike one of the LifeNet employees as he attempted to assist Jordyn,” who smelled of alcohol, the officer alleged in his affidavit.
“Jordyn continued to be disruptive with LifeNet personnel, so I informed them I would follow them to the hospital in case she became aggressive with LifeNet personnel.
“Once at the hospital, Jordyn continued to be disruptive and aggressive. Jordyn attempted to slap at one of the nurses at the Stillwater Medical Center at one point, but hospital staff was able to calm Jordyn down. I remained at the hospital because Jordyn would become aggressive with hospital staff and scream at them.
“Jordyn would attempt to get out of the bed, yelling at hospital staff, causing nurses to be posted at her bed so she did not injure herself further. At one point during this time, Jordyn ripped the IV the hospital staff had given her from her arm.
“I attempted to speak with Jordyn multiple times about her behavior with the hospital staff, in an attempt to reason with her so she would cooperate as the hospital staff cared for her. I informed Jordyn that if she continued this behavior, the hospital staff would ask Jordyn to leave the hospital, and she would then be arrested for public intoxication.
“After some time, Jordyn got out of the hospital bed again,” and attempted to slap a nurse, after which she slapped another nurse on her left arm. I then placed Jordyn in handcuffs and informed her she was under arrest for assault and battery upon emergency medical care providers. Officer Ballard and I then escorted Jordyn out of the Stillwater Medical Center Emergency Room.
“Jordyn refused to walk and would just fall to the ground as Officer Ballard and I attempted to walk her out, causing us to place Jordyn in an under-hook prisoner escort position to escort Jordyn to my patrol car. I did not search Jordyn due to hospital staff changing her clothing out for a hospital gown and a diaper,” Officer Gulick alleged in his affidavit.
She was then taken to the Stillwater City Jail, the affidavit said.
