(Stillwater, Okla.) — On Sunday at 1:45 a.m. Stillwater police responded to a convenience store parking lot at 601 E. 6th to investigate a shooting, a news release said.
Upon arrival, officers found 23-year-old Tonkawa resident Jared Lance Roybal in a van with a gunshot wound in his neck, a police news release said.
Roybal had been driven from the scene of the shooting to the store by his brother, who asked the clerk to call 911 for medical assistance, the news release said.
Roybal was transported from the scene by LifeNet ambulance in critical condition to Stillwater Medical Center before being transferred to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he died Sunday as a result of his wounds, the news release said.
The investigation led officers to the scene of the shooting in the 3100 block E. Raintree on the east side of Stillwater, police said.
Preliminary information indicated Roybal and his brother were driving when they came upon two vehicles stopped in the roadway on Raintree and two individuals involved in a verbal altercation, police said.
As Roybal and his brother pulled closer and stopped near the vehicles, one of the vehicles pulled away, police said.
One of the individuals, who had been arguing, confronted Roybal and began yelling at him, police said.
As Roybal began to respond, the man pulled out a handgun and shot Roybal once in the neck, police said.
Roybal’s brother drove him to 601 E. 6th to seek help, police said.
Investigators identified Darwin Lonestar Marcel Doyal, 29, of Stillwater, as the person who shot Roybal, the news release said.
Doyal was arrested for murder and booked at the Stillwater PD jail on Sunday, the news release said.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the Stillwater Police Department at 405-372-4171, the news release said.
