(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 36-year-old Stillwater man, alleged to have threatened to shoot a boy if he ever told and to beat another boy if he did not comply, remains jailed on $100,000 bail on two counts of child sexual abuse pending a Dec. 3 court appearance at which he can seek a preliminary hearing.
Michael Phillip Kurtanic was given a court-appointed attorney at his arraignment on Wednesday.
Kurtanic could be imprisoned for a minimum of 50 years or given as much as two life sentences if convicted of repeatedly abusing both boys during a two-year period when he lived at their rural residence in Payne County, court records show.
When Kurtanic was arrested on Oct. 25, he “initially denied any inappropriate sexual contact with the children,” Payne County Sheriff’s Investigator Rockford Brown wrote in an affidavit.
However, Kurtanic later admitted that both boys whom he was accused of abusing, as well as another child under the age of 12, had seen him fondling himself while watching pornography, the affidavit alleged. “These instances occurred at different times with each child individually,” the affidavit alleged.
“Kurtanic began living with the family in the middle of 2017 and recently moved from the residence in June 2019,” according to the affidavit.
One boy, who was allegedly repeatedly abused from the age of 7 through the age of 9, was forensically interviewed at the Saville Center in Stillwater on Oct. 25, the affidavit said.
The child disclosed that the last time Kurtanic had sexual contact with him, Kurtanic told the boy he was in trouble and took the child to a separate room, the affidavit alleged.
The boy said that Kurtanic performed oral sex on him on the day of the child’s 8th birthday, the affidavit alleged.
“Kurtanic told (the boy) that he would take him away and shoot him if (the boy) ever told anyone about the abuse,” the affidavit alleged.
Another boy interviewed at the Saville Center in Stillwater on Oct. 25, who was allegedly repeatedly abused from the age of 10 through the age of 11, said, “Kurtanic would make the child perform oral sex on him on nearly a daily basis for several months,” the investigator alleged in his affidavit.
“Kurtanic would threaten to beat (that boy) if the child did not comply,” the affidavit alleged.
