(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 37-year-old Stillwater man accused of breaking into Kerr Hall at Oklahoma State University and possessing methamphetamine has been jailed on $25,000 bail pending a court appearance this week on a two-count charge.
If convicted of second-degree burglary and drug possession, Daniel Blair Pike could be incarcerated for eight years and fined $11,000, according to the charge filed last week.
Pike was sitting in an office chair inside Kerr Hall when he was arrested at 8:04 am on March 22 by OSU Police Officer Enrico D. Alvarado, an affidavit said.
About 50 minutes earlier, at 7:14 pm, “Officer Briana Page and I conducted a building check of Kerr Hall,” after Officer William Patterson advised seeing a suspicious male around Kerr Hall that he believed to be Pike, “who had allegedly been breaking into Kerr Hall, stealing copper,” Officer Alvarado alleged in his affidavit.
“As I searched (the first floor), I located several tools (wire cutters, two crowbars, pliers) on the floor outside of a room. Looking inside the room, I found a black backpack tucked in a corner. Inside the bag was an axe and an assortment of smaller tools. Nearby was an open gallon of water that did not have dust accumulated on it like other items in the area. Believing the items were newer, I told Officer Page I think the suspect may still be in the building,” Officer Alvarado wrote in his affidavit.
“Reaching the center of the first floor, next to the elevators, I began to smell cigarette smoke that grew stronger as I approached the north exterior doors. Entering the single room, the smell was very strong, leading me to believe someone was actively smoking a cigarette in the room.
“I drew my pistol and announced myself as an OSU police officer and commanded anyone in the room to identify themselves. I heard a male voice state, ‘I’m in here’ and I ordered him to show his hands. The white male, wearing a red/black flannel long sleeve shirt and blue jeans, sitting in an office chair, complied and identified himself as ‘Daniel,’ who after being escorted outside displayed a paper, temporary license as Daniel Blair Pike, Officer Alvarado alleged in his affidavit.
“Pike stated he entered Kerr Hall through an open door on the east side. Shift supervisor Sgt. Blake O’Dell arrived and with Officer Page remained with Pike as I re-entered Kerr Hall to search the immediate area of where Pike was located. I found two additional black backpacks, a still lit cigarette, miscellaneous hardware, wires, screws, and appliance parts. Inside one of the backpacks, I found a crowbar, gardening shears and a screwdriver bit. I stomped the cigarette out and took possession of the backpacks.
“Pike was transported to the Payne County Jail and prior to leaving the jail, I checked the backseat of my patrol car where Pike sat. Under the seat, I located a small silver flashlight, a couple triple-A Energizer batteries, and a small, sealed bag containing a spring, pin and a silver key. I believe Pike was attempting to conceal these items, and I believe the bag of items was stolen from Kerr Hall, but at the time of this report, I am unable to confirm my suspicion.
“Other items in the backpack included lighters, a phone charging pack, a green tote strap and a small white ceramic jar,” containing two white pills identified as Xanax and a small baggy containing one gram of a substance that field-tested as methamphetamine, Officer Alvarado alleged in his affidavit.
