(Cushing, Okla.)  Relay For Life 2011 held its official kick-off on Monday Jan. 25, 2011, with a review of last year and a look toward the future.  It’s the second year for Dedra Marotta to chair the event with help from Julie Davis, American Cancer Society staff partner.

Davis had nothing but good things to say about Cushing’s Relay for Life.  “It’s been an incredible blessing to work with the Cushing community,” Davis said, choking back her emotion.  “You all have come together to fight.  Your passion is incredible.  The fight is so incredibly hard.  You are making such an impact.”

Davis went on to say that Cushing came in fifth in the nation with the $72,000 raised last year for the American Cancer Society.  “Not in the region, not in the state – but fifth in the nation!” Davis said proudly.  “Nine thousand people were served last year because of what you did.”

Relay teams and corporate sponsors were recognized at Monday’s meeting.  Baker Pharmacy came in as the top fundraising team with the amount of $7,515.56.   “I think everyone has a ‘Pray for a Miracle’ t-shirt,” Davis said with a grin.

Other teams recognized: Walmart, Drumright Dental joined Baker Pharmacy for raising at least $5,000.  Urban Roots was recognized as the Light of Hope team for the most luminaries sold and also the Rising Star award.  Walmart received the Spirit award.

Marotta thanked everyone who helped make it possible to raise the $72,000 and invited more to get involved in 2011.    This year’s goal is $75,000.

Relay for Life will be held on May 6th – 7th, 2011.
