Redgie Lee Reed was born November 15, 1946 in Ripley, OK. On Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 12:50 p.m. Redgie passed away after struggling with health conditions the past several years, he was 65 years old and had been living at the V.A. Nursing Home in Winfield, KS since July of 2011.
Funeral services have been entrusted to the care of the Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Cushing and will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 23, 2012 in the Perkins Church of the Firstborn with Brother’s Scott Heddleston and Bob Dierberger officiating. Burial will be held at Parkland Cemetery, Parkland, OK.
Redgie was the son of Raymond Elmer and Lula Jewell (Porter) Reed. The third child of eight children, Raymond Jr., Fred Leon, Redgie Lee, Judy Darlene, Freida May, Ronnie Jean, Florence Elizabeth, and Linda Sheree. Redgie was a tag-a-long to his older brothers, but with dark curly hair, blue eyes and long lashes he was endeared to his younger sisters, always ready with a story to tell, embellished somewhat, but never the less enjoyed by all.
In 1966 Redgie enlisted in the Army, honorably serving his country during the Viet Nam War. After completing his first term he reenlisted for a second tour of duty and was stationed within the United States and Germany. During his enlistment he met and married his first wife, and from that union one daughter was born, Tammy Lynn Reed.
After his service ended Redgie moved back to OK, where he became reacquainted, fell in love and on September 19, 1969 married his childhood sweetheart Virginia Elayne Romine. Virginia was the daughter of Brother Russell Wiley and Sister Beulah Virginia (Hoover) Romine, both deceased. Together Redgie and Virginia had two children, Kathy Marie and Matthew Dwayne. Redgie drove a truck for several different companies for a living, ending with Prime Trucking in 1992. Over the last 10 years Redgie and Virginia made their home in Tonkawa, OK. Prior to living in Tonkawa they had lived in the Agra and Cushing areas. Redgie enjoyed hunting, playing the bongo drums, riding his motorcycle and staying in touch with friends on the highway. He also loved his cb/ham radio, devising an antenna of his own and spent many hours chatting with people all over the country.
Redgie was preceded in death by his younger brother Ronnie Jean Reed, one son, Matthew Dwayne Reed, parents Raymond and Jewell Reed and his older brother Raymond Reed, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Virginia Elayne of Winfield, KS; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Nickerson of Temple, TX and Kathy Marie Reed of Ponca City, OK; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, one brother, Fred Reed of Ripley, OK; four sisters, Judy Overacker of Agra, OK, Freida Wilkinson of Lexington, OK, Florence Mills of Ponca City, OK, and Linda Simpson of Crescent, OK; several aunts, uncles, and many nieces and nephews.
Redgie will surely be missed by those that knew and loved him.
