While Notre Dame graduate Sarah Smith is not from Cushing, she definitely has some strong Cushing ties. She is the daughter of Danny and Elizabeth Smith and sister of Jacob and Zachery all of Oklahoma City, as well as the granddaughter of Lynda Smith and the late Dr. George Smith of Cushing.

Recently Smith was named to the All-Big East Team for her standout accomplishments in softball. As an outfielder for the Fighting Irish, Smith led the team with a .373 batting average and 57 hits and was named the Big East player of the week on April 28.

In conference play, she led the league in sacrifice bunts and finished second in hits (32) and batting average (.457).

Not only is Smith an accomplished softball player, she earned four letters as a guard on the basketball team and two as a sprinter on the track team during her high school years at Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City. And during her off seasons, she has been known to compete in triathlons.

Quite a list of accomplishments indeed!

Smith graduated from Notre Dame, Monday, June 9, 2008 with a theology degree. She plans on continuing her education by pursuing her master’s degree in sports administration at Northern Colorado beginning this fall.

“I’m so proud of my granddaughter,” said Lynda Smith, beaming.

And who wouldn’t be?
