(Stillwater, Okla.) – Two days before Christmas, a Cushing pickup driver was placed on one year’s probation for causing a head-on high-speed collision that killed a motorcyclist near Ripley.
Robert Daniel Massey, now 21, was 19 at the time of the Oct. 3, 2013, crash that caused the death of Paul Scott Conklin, court records show.
Massey was driving a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup truck on 68th Street near West Point Road when it collided head-on with Conklin’s Honda motorcycle, court records show.
Massey pleaded guilty last week to a negligent homicide charge for having reckless disregard for the safety of others “by cutting to the inside of a curve and driving westbound in the eastbound lane of traffic” colliding with the motorcycle driven by Conklin, who died at the scene, court records show.
As part of a plea bargain approved by Special District Judge Robert Hert last week, Massey was ordered to have a driver safety or defensive driving course, to attend a victim impact panel and to perform 96 hours of community service including 48 hours with the county’s environmental office, court records show.
Massey was also ordered to pay a $750 fine and a $750 contribution to the victims’ compensation fund, court records show.
Because Massey was given a deferred sentence, he will not have a criminal record of the negligent homicide charge, which is a misdemeanor, if he successfully completes his probationary period.
