(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 20-year-old Perkins man accused of stealing a car, attempting to elude at speeds of more than 100 mph on Main Street in Stillwater, and running a roadblock before crashing in a yard near Highway 33 and Fairgrounds Road has been jailed on $15,000 bail pending a Jan. 14 court appearance.
If convicted of all three counts, Xavier Charles Lloyd Grimmett could be given a 15-year prison term and fined $10,000 plus three times the value of the car, according to the charges filed last week.
Stillwater Police Sgt. Miguel Najera alleged in an affidavit that shortly after midnight on Dec. 29, 2024, he attempted to make a traffic stop on a white 2013 Scion that was reported as involved in a pursuit in Noble County about 35 minutes earlier.
“The vehicle took off south on Boomer Road at a high rate of speed…At the intersection of McElroy and Main, a marked Stillwater police unit was stopped near the intersection with its emergency lights activated, and a uniformed police officer exited the vehicle and yelled stop, and vehicle continued south on Main Street past the unit.
“The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed down Main Street in excess of 100 mph,” before turning onto Miller Avenue and turning off all lights on the vehicle, which then went through a red light at Virginia and Perkins, the affidavit alleged.
“The vehicle continued east on Virginia with no illumination still on the vehicle and passed a vehicle that was stopped on the opposite side of the road for the emergency vehicles following the vehicle. I lost sight of the vehicle, but the vehicle was later pursued by the Payne County Sheriff’s Office before it came to rest in a yard in the area of Hwy. 33 and Fairgrounds.
“Xavier admitted to driving the vehicle and not stopping for the police and turning off his headlights. Xavier also admitted to stealing the vehicle earlier in the evening,” Sgt. Najera alleged in his affidavit.
The unlocked car that had been parked on a curb with the keys in the center console cup holder was stolen between 7:30 pm on Dec. 28, 2024, and 1 am on Dec. 29, 2024, Stillwater Police Officer Gaige Ellis alleged in another affidavit.
“Noble County, Payne County, and Stillwater Police Department had all been involved in pursuits of a vehicle that matched the description of the (owner’s) car,” the affidavit alleged.
The suspects fled on foot after the vehicle crashed out near Hwy. 33 and Fairgrounds Road, the affidavit alleged.
“Sgt. Hansen advised that based off of information from Noble County, the primary suspect was Xavier Grimmett,” who was arrested at 11:07 on Dec. 29, 2024, in Stillwater at the residence of his girlfriend — who said she was a passenger in the car driven by Grimmett, the affidavit alleged.
“On Dec. 29, 2024, Sgt. Najera conducted an interview with Xavier in the jail,” where he admitted to taking the car, using it to pick up his girlfriend, and driving her to Noble County to gather her belongings, the affidavit alleged.
