(Stillwater, Okla.) — A Perkins man accused of repeatedly hitting a man in the head with a baseball bat has been released on a personal recognizance bond pending a June 6 court appearance with an attorney.

If convicted of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Brent William Ellis, 37, could be given a 10-year prison term, according to the charge filed May 8.

Ellis was arrested on May 4 after the victim, who had noticeable fresh cuts and blood on his face, said, “he was just attacked by Brent Ellis,” Perkins Police Officer Kyle Howard alleged in an affidavit.

Outside the Perkins police station at 10:11 p.m., the victim was standing by a vehicle — driven by Ellis’s ex-wife — that had one window broken out and another one cracked, the affidavit said.

The victim said that he had gone to speak with Ellis about a state Department of Human Services call, the affidavit said.

The victim said that while he was in the vehicle driven by the defendant’s ex-wife, “Brent ran up to the car while it was on the street, (and) struck the front passenger-side window twice with a baseball bat,” the affidavit alleged.

The defendant “then struck the rear passenger side of the vehicle with the bat, breaking the window. On the final swing to break the window, Brent hit (the victim) with the bat,” the affidavit alleged.

The victim said “after the window broke, Brent struck him twice in the head with the handle of the bat,” the affidavit alleged. Ellis’s ex-wife then drove to the police department — where the victim declined medical attention, the affidavit said.

When the officer arrived at Ellis’s residence and spoke to him, “I noticed a strong odor that would be associated with an alcoholic beverage,” the affidavit alleged.

Ellis told the officer that his ex-wife “came to his bedroom window of his house and banged on it. He came out with a bat to defend himself.

“He said he broke the rear window and also damaged the front window. He said he may have hit (the man) in the head while swinging the bat,” the affidavit alleged.

In his house, Ellis showed the officer the aluminum baseball bat that weighed 20.5 ounces, after which the officer walked back outside and told the victim to stay by his vehicle, the affidavit alleged.

Asked again if he wanted to see medics, the victim, who had a noticeable large lump on the back of his head, said he did, the affidavit said.

Ellis’s ex-wife said “the reason they were even at the house was because Brent called them to come over. She said once they pulled up, Brent came running out by the side of the house and began swinging,” the affidavit alleged.

After the victim was examined by a paramedic at the scene, he refused treatment, but said he would go to the hospital on his own, the affidavit said.

Ellis was arrested by the Perkins police officer and transported to the Payne County Jail by Deputy Justin Henninger, the affidavit said.
