Everyone knows they really need to get a flu shot. But sometimes it’s difficult to carve out a few moments during the busy day to stop by the doctor’s office or health department to be immunized. With that in mind, the Payne County Health Department has scheduled a special evening flu clinic in the aerobics room of the Cushing Youth & Community Center, 700 S. Little, on Wednesday, November 12 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Patrons are asked to use the northeast door when entering the building.

“Annual vaccination against influenza is recommended for everyone, including children, who want to reduce the risk of becoming ill,” said Darlene Albrecht, RN, Coordinating Nurse at Payne County Health Department’s Cushing office. “Persons at high risk of complications from influenza should definitely take advantage of the opportunity to receive their immunization as early as possible in the flu season”

Oklahoma’s flu season usually occurs from October through May. This year more than 404,000 doses of adult and child vaccine were ordered by the Oklahoma State Department of Health to be distributed to county health departments and public healthcare providers statewide. Vaccine is also available through many private healthcare providers.

No appointment is necessary at the after-hours clinic. Although there is no charge for getting a flu shot from the Payne County Health Department, voluntary donations will be accepted.

“We usually don’t see our first laboratory-confirmed case of influenza until late November or early December. We hope Cushing area residents will use every opportunity to get vaccinated throughout the fall and winter months, whether through the health department or from private healthcare providers,” said Annette O’Connor, PCHD Administrator.
