(Tulsa, Okla.)  – Sufficient sleep is increasingly being recognized as an essential aspect of chronic disease prevention, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). However, one in six Americans – roughly 40 million people – are living with a sleep disorder, which puts them at an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, obesity and decreased quality of life.

Oklahoma Heart Institute, (OHI), the state’s largest hospital dedicated exclusively to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease, is expanding their sleep medicine service line to improve access for patients throughout northeastern Oklahoma. On December 11, Oklahoma Heart Institute Sleep Care will assume the management and operations of existing sleep clinics at Hillcrest Hospital South in Tulsa, Hillcrest Claremore, Hillcrest Cushing, Hillcrest Henryetta and Bailey Medical Center in Owasso. Oklahoma Heart Institute Sleep Care at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa will continue to see patients.

Oklahoma Heart Institute Sleep Care patients benefit from the center’s highly-trained medical staff and comprehensive care model set forth by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Beginning with a convenient referral process, accurate and timely assessment to diagnosis, treatment and long-term follow-up care, all steps of the care model are managed by one of Oklahoma Heart Institute’s board certified Sleep Medicine physicians to maximize effectiveness.

“Sleep disorders can have a profound impact on the total health and wellness of a patient,” said Kevin Lewis, MD, Medical Director of Oklahoma Heart Institute Sleep Care. “By enhancing sleep medicine services in these communities, we hope to address one of the predominant risk factors associated with some of Oklahoma’s most common – and most serious – health concerns including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.”

Oklahoma Heart Institute provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular services including a comprehensive Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center, Cardiovascular Interventional and Electrophysiology Laboratories, Pre- and Post-Cardiac Cath Lab Procedure Beds, a Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Telemetry Beds, a Heart Failure CARE Center, Cardiovascular Research program and an Education Center.
