Nadine Matthews Watkins, former Cushing resident, now of Owasso, passed away on Monday evening May 12, 2008 at the age of 84 years.
The daughter of the late George Preston Matthews and Lucille Watkins Matthews, Nadine was born February 23, 1924 on the family farm South of Agra. Nadine began her school career at Agra and graduated with the class of 1941, later attending Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University) in Stillwater.
She was united in marriage to A.C. Watkins on Sunday, November 7, 1943 at the First Baptist Church in Agra. They made their first home west of Cushing. They were blessed with two children, Judith Kay in 1946 and Jan Aaron in 1957.
Nadine was employed with the C.R. Anthony Company and the Cushing Grocery Company. In 1951 she became the payroll clerk for Midland Cooperatives Refinery in Cushing, a position she held until 1956, when she left so that A.C. might begin work there. She was then employed by the Cushing Masonic Hospital and later worked 19 years as a receptionist/nurse for Dr. W.O. Davis. After retiring from that position, she assisted Jan as bookkeeper at Cushing Floral and Gifts until 1993.
Nadine was a 50 year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, holding several offices, as well as President, on numerous occasions. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the DeMolay Mother’s Club.
In September 2000 Nadine and A.C.’s daughter Judy, succumbed to a lengthy battle with cancer. Five months later in February 2001, their grandson, Justin Brian Sanders was killed in a military maneuver off the cost of Florida. In October 2005, their son-in-law, O.M. “Bud” Sanders, Jr. also passed away.
Nadine is survived by her husband of 64 years, A.C. of the home; a son, Jan and his wife Elizabeth of Sammamish, WA; one grandson, George Matthew Watkins of Seattle, WA; two granddaughters, Greta Sanders Westrope and her husband Gerald of Tulsa and Hayden Nadine Watkins of New York City, NY; one great grandson, Zachariah Kent Remington and two great granddaughters, Sierra Renee Remington and Maddie Westrope all of Tulsa; one brother James P. Matthews of Claremore; five sisters-in-law, Allene Matthews of Coweta, Ruthie Matthews of Austin, TX, Addie Crane of Mounds, Ann Watkins of Tulsa and Peggy Watkins of Edmond; two aunts, Bonnie Ausbrook of Oilton and Ruby Williamson of Kingston, OK; several nieces and nephews; long time friends, Paul and Alma Carpenter of Lakeland, FL and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, daughter and grandson, Nadine was preceded in death by two brothers, William G. Matthews and Ermal Leon Matthews.
Two services will be held for Nadine, the first service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. in the Alsup Chapel at the Baptist Village of Owasso with Reverend Jerry Baines officiating. The second service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. in the First Baptist Church of Cushing.
Burial will follow in the Flynn Cemetery, Cushing.
Serving as casket bearers will be Butch King, Brandon King, Brian King, Benjamin King, David Dawes, Trace Gideon, Mike Dawes, Jason Floyd and Jimmie Maynard. Honorary casket bearers will be Rodger Floyd, Wilmer Smith, Gerald Hall, Buddy Gideon and Oliver Kinzie.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 187 Cushing, OK 74023, in her memory.
