Cushing, Oklahoma – (April 6, 2009) – A special Luminaria Ceremony held during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Cushing remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived. Luminaria will be lit at O’Dell Field on May 8th at 9:00 p.m. to represent these individuals.

Anyone desiring to make a luminaria donation may do so by contacting Marcia Pixler at 405-742-0548. Each luminaria candle is $5.00.

“It is beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track,” said Marcia Pixler Relay chair. “The Luminaria Ceremony is such a moving way to remember our loved ones lost to cancer.”

Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising event in the nation and to celebrate the lives of those who have had cancer, remember those lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches … people from all walks of life. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of eliminating cancer.

Cushing’s cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) will kick off the Relay For Life on May 8th at 7:00 p.m. with the official Survivors Lap; then, the rest of the participants will join the fun.

Information about making a luminaria donation, forming a team, or walking in The Survivors Lap is available by calling 405-742-0548 or 405-612-1174, or on the Web at www.relayforlife.org/cushingok
