Cushing, Oklahoma (July 25, 2019) – Hillcrest Cushing is offering fresh, local produce to the community through a new initiative, raised garden beds.

The hospital has nine beds, located west of the main entrance (1027 E. Cherry St.), which are growing tomatoes, squash, green beans, potatoes, strawberries and different types of peppers. Anyone in the community is welcome to come to the hospital to pick produce.

This is the first year for the community garden, and hospital leadership hopes it will continue to get bigger every year.

“We did this for the community because we want to provide residents with additional healthy and delicious options should they need them,” said Kevin Hawk, CEO of Hillcrest Cushing. “I enjoy seeing community members come up to our grounds and pick throughout the day.”

Hawk describes the garden as a team effort. Several hospital departments host and tend to each bed.

“We work as a family to water and tend to the gardens,” Hawk said.

In the future, Hawk encourages other businesses to consider growing a raised garden bed and businesses are welcome to host it on hospital property.

The garden is available seven days a week.
