(Cushing, Okla.) Russ Thurman, President of the local Lions Club International, called the meeting to order today at 12:27 p.m. The agenda started with song and pledge by Lion Jerry Snyder. This was followed by request for prayers and the prayer with Reverend Kathleen Leithner.
Today’s distinguished guest was Jill Shero, Field Representative for Congressman Frank Lucas, who has visited the club on at least one other occasion. On that particular day she recalled that the Lions Club meeting was all about the Boys Ranch, something that she knew about from having foster children around as a child growing up.
The Gas Tax was brought up and Shero stated that Paul Ryan, who was recently elected to replace John Boehner as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, has said there will be no increase.
Shero works with Congressman Lucas’ office to provide communication and casework assistance in the district office, which is located in Canadian County.
A general meeting of the membership was on today’s agenda and covered the various Lions eye screening events – including the one that took place in Yale (Oklahoma) this morning (Nov. 3rd). The screening evaluated 105 children, age’s Pre-K through 3rd Grade and was manned by Lion Tom Cummings and Lion Jim Pickard. Their findings from the screenings showed that several families were in need of their child needing to be seen by an eye doctor. Additional screenings are set for Cushing on November 11th and 12th.
