The Lachenmeyer Arts Center is hosting “Tour de Quartz” through September 11, 2009. The exhibit features drawings and photographs produced by Oklahoma high school students who participated in the 2009 Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain State Park near Altus, OK.
The drawing portion of the tour consists of large scale self portraits in charcoal. Each portrait is unique, revealing not only the artist’s physical features, but his or her personality and emotional state. The photographs feature a variety of subject matter, with an emphasis on the people and scenes of southwest Oklahoma. The photographs were created using several photographic methods including conventional black and white , color digital, hand painted prints and cyanotype.
The student artists featured in Tour de Quartz come from rural and urban areas across the state. The students were chosen by competitive statewide auditions to attend the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute, a two week residential academy in June. The institute is taught by nationally renowned artists. This year’s drawing and painting students studied with Kristy Deetz of DePere, Wisconsin and the photography class was led by Jill Enfield of New York, NY.
The Lachenmeyer Arts Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday & Friday and 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The art center is located in the Cushing Youth & Community Center at 700 S. Little Ave. Admission is free. For more information call 918-225-7525.
