(Cushing, Okla.) Rodeo-goers are in for a treat this year as John Harrison makes his Cushing debut at this year’s PRCA rodeo.
It is not, however, his first rodeo.
Harrison’s rodeo roots run deep. “I grew up in the rodeo business,” Harrison said.
No doubt. Harrison’s grandfather is the late World Champion Bull Rider, Freckles Brown. At age 6, Harrison received his first trick riding lesson after watching a trick rider perform at a nearby rodeo. Since then he has trained and performed with many of the best trick riders in the world.
Today, PRCA trick rider and barrel man Harrison, entertains crowds all over the country with his fast, colorful roman riding, trick roping and trick riding. Split flaming fire stakes, flaming horseshoe of fire, vaults and athletic maneuvers – including the difficult shoulder stand while riding a runaway horse around the arena – are just part of his repertoire. In 2003, Harrison added a comedy act featuring “Miss Rodeo Universe.” She is described as having “poise, articulate expression, and a flashy fashion sense.”
Harrison has been selected to perform three times at the prestigious Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, NV. Six times he has been nominated for Comedy Act of the Year, twice nominated for Coors Man in the Can and twice for PRCA’s Clown of the Year.
Harrison hails from Soper, OK, but has Cushing ties as well. His father, Wiley Harrison, was Cushing Rodeo Association President John Bryant’s roommate in college.
“He’s my namesake,” Bryant said. “But I’ve never seen him [perform].”
Bryant said he’d been trying to get Harrison for the Cushing Rodeo for several years, but until now, Harrison’s schedule just would allow it.
“I’m usually doing a rodeo out west,” Harrison said. “So I’m really looking forward to seeing John and being in Cushing.”
Harrison lives in Soper with his wife, Carla and daughter Addison and son Cazwell. Aside from his PRCA credentials, he has a degree in Ag-business and is a certified Equine Massage Therapist. Each year, the Harrisons produce the Freckles Brown Memorial Bull Riding in Hugo, OK and the Centennial Frontier Experience at the Oklahoma State Fair.
