John Harold Smith, Sr. age 86 a longtime Oilton resident, passed away on Monday, January 25, 2010 at his home in Oilton.  Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. , Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Oilton.  Rev. Dale Haskins of Silver City Free Will Baptist Church will officiate.  Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery , Oilton.

John was born on March 12, 1923 in Cleveland , Oklahoma to the late James Abe and Susan E. (Oates) Smith.  He grew up in the Cleveland, Drumright and Oilton area. John attended school in Oilton.  He entered the U.S. Army in 1943, serving his country during WWII.  He received four bronze star medals and the Purple Heart while serving his country.   John returned home in 1945.  John married Betty Evelyn Green on April 8, 1947 , to this union three children were born.  They lived south of Oilton on an oil lease for ten years then moved into Oilton where he has since lived.   He worked for the oilfield in many capacities, retiring in 1987.  Evelyn passed away in 1992.  John attended the First Free Will Baptist Church in both Oilton and Silver City.  He married Betty Jo Posey on July 21, 1995 in Eureka Springs, Ar.  John enjoyed squirrel hunting and mushroom hunting.  He liked working in his garden.

John is survived by his wife Betty Jo Smith of the home, sons Gary Smith and wife Chrystall of Oilton, Verlin Smith and wife Gail of Jennings, John Harold Smith Jr. and wife Brenda of Yukon, step-daughter Danelia Barnes and husband Tim of Oilton, step-son-in law Mike Strader of Yale, grandchildren Amber Heath and husband Rick, Amanda McCauley and husband Clint, Jared Smith, Kelsey, Alexandra and Courtney Smith, Jessica Jones and husband Jason, Cory Smith and wife Dion Rogers, step-grandchildren Gayla Gilmore, Ginger Osborn, Adam Strader, Daniel Horrell and Jon Barnes, great grandchildren Kristen and Kaycee Dunham, Madisyn and Wyatt McCauley, Payten Marie Smith, step-great grandchildren Tyler and Katlin Gilmore, Abby and Allyson Barnes.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Evelyn Smith, his parents, step-daughters Terri Strader and Glenna Osborn, brothers and sisters Ruby M. Eiseman, Marshall B. Smith, Clell Bass, Beatrice Casey, James A. Smith Jr., Katherine Stitt, Donna A. Carter, Donald H. Smith and Nell Burk.
