(Tulsa, Okla.) – For the first time in Tulsa, the heartbeat of an unborn baby and a mother’s contractions can be tracked in real time by a physician using a smartphone, such as an iPhone, Blackberry or Android.

Hillcrest HealthCare System is the first Tulsa area health care provider to acquire and implement an innovative patient monitoring system for our labor and delivery patients that allows doctors and nurses to see vital signs of these patients in real time from virtually anywhere, at any time. A provider can read a patient’s real-time and historical waveform data, like a fetal heartbeat, maternal contractions, vital signs and nursing notes from a mobile device.

It’s called AirStrip OBâ„¢ from AirStrip Technologies, based in San Antonio, Texas and it is currently in use at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Bailey Medical Center in Owasso and Cushing Regional Hospital. 19 Hillcrest HealthCare System providers are using AirStrip OB and have logged in over 500 times in the first few weeks of service.

“This technology improves our ability to care for our patients by providing instant, critical information to our physicians, regardless of their location,” said Kevin Gross, president and CEO of Hillcrest HealthCare System.  “Our physicians can closely monitor patients and be ready to react immediately to a changing situation at any time.  This should give our patients more peace of mind during an important time in their lives.”

AirStrip OB basically works in conjunction with the existing monitoring systems you see at a patient’s bedside. The doctor can use his or her smartphone to log on and see the waveform data remotely. On their smartphone screen, the data looks essentially the same as it looks on the in-room hospital monitor.

AirStrip OB is cleared by the FDA for use in the United States and this application also uses state-of-the-art security measures to ensure the privacy of patients is fully protected and in compliance with federal regulations.

AirStrip OB is the first and only such remote patient monitoring solution in the United States.
