Herbert Edward Vaughan, longtime Cushing resident, passed away Wednesday of complications from arterial disease.

Herbert was born on September 7, 1925 to Herbert & Myra Vaughan.

After a career as a mechanic in aerospace, Mr. Vaughan retired to rural Cushing and worked for Cushing Public Schools as a bus mechanic and driver and was often greeted by former riders.  A WWII navy veteran, he piloted landing craft under fire at Tarawa and other Pacific islands and survived a kamikaze attack to his ship, the USS Bunker Hill.  He was an active volunteer, serving in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts as a leader for both his son and grandson, working with the free Thanksgiving dinner for Cushing residents, and volunteering at Harrison Elementary even after his great grand children had advanced.

He was preceded in death by wife Patricia and his great-granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Dean.  He is survived by one son Coplan Edward Vaughan and his wife Carol of Utah; one daughter Myra Annette Vaughan of California; his grandson Michael Dean and his wife Terri, great-grandson Ian Dean, and great-great-granddaughter Amaya Leann Dean-Barr, all of Norman.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Gary Detrich officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Gary Detrich at Cimarron Valley Animal Clinic, 1402 East Main, Cushing, OK, to support the Cushing community Thanksgiving dinner.
