Harvey Kates, Jr., age 85 a longtime Cushing resident, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at his home. Palmer-Marler Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Cushing with interment to follow in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park in Cushing.
Harvey was born February 4, 1924 in Carney, OK. to the late Harvey and Leona Caroline (Scheer) Kates. He attended school in Carney, graduating in 1941, later attending O.S.U. Harvey had served in the United States Army during WWII. He worked in the oilfield as a production superintendent. Harvey was a member of the First United Methodist Church serving as president for the Methodist Men. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the Homestead. Harvey was an avid reader, especially reading western books. He liked to fish and hunt. Harvey loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Harvey married Nellie Mae Howser in September 20, 1942 in Oklahoma City, OK, to this union five children were born.
Harvey was a Master Mason at Cushing Masonic Lodge-past presiding officer and Drumright Masonic Lodge-past presiding officer, York Rite Mason at Cimarron Valley York Rite Bodies in Drumright-past presiding officer; and honor of Knight York Cross of Honor, 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason in Guthrie with decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor, Shrine Mason at Adkar Temple in Tulsa. He was a member of the Claflan Masonic Lodge in Kansas since 1947.
Survivors include his wife Nellie of the home, son Harvey Duane Kates of Cushing, daughters Sheila Allee of Purcell, OK, Ann Biswell and husband Bill of Cushing, Kim Kates of Cushing, son-in-law Gary Pinkerton of Gravett, AR., grandchildren, Curtis Pinkerton, Brian Allee and wife Charity, Brandon Allee and wife Susan, Doug Biswell and wife Rachael, Scott Biswell and wife Katie; great-grandchildren, Azia & Taegan Biswell, Melody & Trevor Allee and Brielle Allee.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Linda Pinkerton, one brother Leroy Kates and one sister Betty Fern and several aunts and uncles.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home.
