(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 30-year-old Glencoe man has pleaded guilty to running over a woman, stealing her iPhone, and stomping on the windshield of her car in Cushing, as well as stalking a former partner, abusing her, breaking into her Yale home, attacking another woman, obstructing a Yale police officer, giving a false name to another Yale police officer on a traffic stop, possessing drugs and driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance, all in 2023.
Explaining why the prosecution offered him a plea agreement for Drug Court, prosecutor Debra Vincent told the judge that all of the victims have had a close relationship to the defendant, Austin Dale Maxwell. “We’re hopeful he can be successful,” in the Payne County Drug Court program, the prosecutor added.
District Judge Phillip Corley approved the plea agreement in court on May 10 and stayed Maxwell’s sentencing until Aug. 8, 2025.
Maxwell, who previously lived in Yale, was arrested last year after a woman reported that at about 11:51 pm on Oct. 21, 2023, Maxwell ran over her and left the area of Oak Street and Central Avenue in Cushing, “possibly headed towards Yale in a silver Buick Encore,” according to an affidavit by Cushing Police Officer Alex Gegen.
She said, “she believed she was okay, but I advised her an ambulance was on the way to check on her,” the officer wrote in his affidavit.
The woman said that she and a friend, listed as Maxwell’s former partner in court records, had left a bar and “Maxwell was following them as he was also at the bar,” the affidavit said.
Her friend “stated that she has a protective order against Maxwell, and he is always causing problems. She said that they attempted to turn around and go somewhere else when Maxwell blocked the car by parking in front of it. (She) stated Maxwell then exited the vehicle and went to her car and began to yell. She advised she told him to leave, but he would not.
“(The woman) stated that Maxwell then got onto her car and stomped on her windshield,” which had footprints on the hood along with severe damage to the windshield, the affidavit said.
“(The woman) then advised that Maxwell then stole her phone and got into his vehicle. She said that she tried to grab it back from him, where he then dragged her with the vehicle and then ran over her leg. EMS arrived where (the woman) was checked on and cleared,” the affidavit said.
She said that she had dropped her phone in the vehicle, and Maxwell might not know it was there; she said she “would attempt to ping the phone and would call if she could get the location,” the affidavit said.
Her left hand had some blood on it with roughed up skin, and her lower left back had more blood with multiple scratches, the affidavit said.
The woman emailed the location of her phone that pinged on Stoney Creek in Stillwater, the affidavit said. The car was located there, but no one was present, the affidavit said.
Two months earlier, Maxwell was charged with stalking his former partner, abusing her, breaking into her house, hitting another woman and obstructing Yale Police Officer Ken Moore in August of 2023, court records show.
In another incident, on March 14, 2023, when Maxwell was stopped in a truck for a traffic violation, he was charged with giving a false first name to Yale Police Officer Stephen Lombard, court records show.
