(Cushing, Okla.) Members of American Legion Donaldson-Walker Post #108 have been addressing the isolation and loneliness many of our aging veterans experience, especially during the holiday season, through the Forgotten Warriors program.
The program in Payne County has found that many veterans in the area are confined to nursing homes and assisted living facilities and are often without family or distanced from family members due living too far away. Other veterans visited may be disabled and/or ill.
During the Christmas season, members of the program make time to visit with the veterans and deliver care packages. The packages usually always include a blanket with the service member’s branch designation on it, such as the Navy emblem for the Navy veterans, Army for the Army, etc. Other items in the package may change from year to year.
This year the Forgotten Warriors Program will visit six retirement homes in Payne County on December 16h and 17th. At least 66 veterans have already been identified to be visited on those dates. Anyone wishing to help with this program may contact Program Coordinator Bobby Bryant at 918-399-3026 or at [email protected] County Forgotten Warriors is dedicated in the memory of STS3 Joseph A. Casson, United States Navy Submariner.
*Bobby Bryant will be on MoJo in the Morning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25th to talk about the Forgotten Warriors Program in Payne County. Tune in to KUSH 1600 to listen.
