The First United Methodist Church in Cushing welcomed its new minister Sunday, June 13, 2010. Rev. Sonja Tobey is an ordained elder of the United Methodist Church and has been under appointment in the Oklahoma Conference for 10 years. She has served in Canton, Union City and Cogar and most recently in Pond Creek. She is excited to be serving now in Cushing, and looks forward to meeting the people of the congregation and community.
Rev. Tobey first felt a calling to ministry when she was a senior in high school in Midwest City, Oklahoma, although she did not fully understand or follow her call into ministry for another fifteen years. During this time, she primarily worked as a legal assistant in Oklahoma City. Rev. Tobey earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Nazarene University, and graduated cum laude with a Master of Divinity Degree from Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has a great passion for preaching and teaching, and plans to pursue a doctorate degree in homiletics in the future.
Sonja and her husband Mike have three children. Garrison and his wife Holly live in Oklahoma City. Briana is currently a student at Oklahoma City University, but is looking forward to her first full time position in youth ministry starting this summer. Chelsea graduated from Pond Creek-Hunter High School in May and is planning to pursue studies in religion at Oklahoma City University this fall.
