(Stillwater, Okla.) — A homeless man, who previously lived in Cushing, has been jailed on $20,000 bail pending a May 2 court appearance on charges of being a felon in possession of a CO2 powered pistol and attacking two Stillwater police officers in the Stillwater Medical Center Emergency Room.
Sage Christopher Brown, 24, could be given as much as a 30-year prison term if found guilty of all counts due to his prior conviction for unauthorized use of a vehicle in 2021 in Stroud, for which he was placed on two years’ probation except 30 days in the Lincoln County Jail, court records show.
Brown was arrested at 11:48 am on April 7 at a trailer to which Stillwater police were sent about 20 minutes earlier on a report of a burglary in progress, an affidavit alleged.
The property owner had moved out and individuals were living there without permission, Stillwater Police Officer Tanner Galbiso alleged in an affidavit.
When the officer arrived, he saw a woman playing in the front yard with a small dog, the affidavit said. “The door of the residence was open and there were various items in the driveway,” the affidavit alleged.
While talking to the woman, who was not charged, “I observed someone walking inside the residence. Sage Brown came to the doorway and stood in the threshold with his hand in the front right pocket of his hoodie,” the officer alleged in his affidavit.
“Sage appeared irritated at my arrival. I kept my eyes trained on his pocket as I defeated the retention hood of my holster in order to access my sidearm. As I asked Sage to come down and speak to me, Sage began to withdraw what appeared to be a black pistol and tossed it on a nearby chair outside the residence,” the officer alleged in his affidavit.
“I quickly determined that the weapon was a CO2 powered pistol. I ordered Sage to walk towards me,” which he did, the officer alleged in his affidavit.
When three more officers arrived, one stayed with Brown and the woman, while two officers began to clear the residence, the affidavit said.
“I observed the house was very disheveled and untidy. There was trash and animal feces on the ground, and there was a strong odor of animal urine,” the officer wrote in his affidavit.
Brown was arrested for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm as well as outstanding warrants, the affidavit said.
“Shortly after, I was notified by Lt. Low via phone call that Sage (Brown) admitted to swallowing an ‘8 ball’ of methamphetamine and would need to be taken to the emergency room to be assessed. While at the ER Sage notified the ER staff that he had swallowed one plastic baggy containing meth.
“As a result, the ER took several x-rays of his stomach to see if they could locate the baggy. They did not. Due to allegedly swallowing the large amount of meth, the on-duty doctor requested to observe Sage,” until 10 pm, the affidavit said.
“While waiting, Sage changed his story about the amount he had ingested several times. As I was about to be relieved by Officer Johnsonbaugh and Officer Gulick, Sage took off his heart monitor cuff — preventing the nurses to check his vitals. As a prevention, we entered the room and notified Sage that we would be handcuffing his other hand to the bed to prevent him from taking the cuff off. Sage then took his blanket and threw it over his head.
“When I attempted to take the blanket off, Sage began kicking at us. I then grabbed his free arm to gain control of him and Sage lunged forward and bit my right arm. I was able to pull away without him breaking my skin.
“When he attempted to bite me again, I used a right closed handed compliant strike to his mouth. Sage stopped for a brief moment, and then began kicking at Officer Gulick striking him in the abdomen and arms. Sage bit me again and I struck him again in the face.
“Sage then grabbed Officer Johnsonbaugh’s duty belt and was attempting to pull him in, so I struck Sage again in the facial area. The only injuries that had occurred were several scratches to my arms,” Officer Galbiso alleged in his affidavit.
