(Stillwater, Okla.) — An ex-convict with eight prior felony convictions has been charged with possessing a stolen car in a parking lot at a Stillwater motel and having methamphetamine – while he was on probation for possessing methamphetamine in Stillwater in 2016.

Former Creek County resident Deron Deangelo Joseph, 30, of Stillwater, who has also been known by the surname of Maxey, remains in the Payne County Jail on $44,000 total bond pending a Sept. 10 court appearance.

In his latest case, Joseph was arrested at 5:46 p.m. on Aug. 5 by Stillwater Police Officer Cory Westbrook, who had been patrolling the area of a motel on W. Sixth Avenue, court records show.

The motel owner said that Joseph, whom the officer had seen on the east side of the building, was starting trouble and had previously been ordered off the property, according to Westbrook’s affidavit.

The defendant told the officer that his name was Joseph Maxey, the affidavit alleged. After the defendant’s birth date was checked against police records, “I asked the male if his name was Deron Deangelo Joseph and he stated that it was,” the officer alleged in his affidavit.

Joseph was hyperactive, unable to stand still and could not follow simple instruction, the affidavit alleged. “I asked Joseph to stick his tongue out. I observed a green film covering Joseph’s tongue,” the officer alleged in his affidavit.

Joseph, who was initially arrested for trespassing, first told the officer that he arrived at the motel by walking, then stated on a bicycle, but none was found at the motel, the affidavit alleged.

A key found in Joseph’s pocket opened the door and started a car, which had been reported stolen in Elk City, the affidavit alleged.

While Joseph was in the back seat of a patrol car, it appeared that he was moving, the affidavit alleged.

Two plastic baggies, one containing what tested as methamphetamine, had been secured to his upper left leg, the affidavit alleged. Another baggy contained a substance field-tested as marijuana was retrieved from his inside leg, the affidavit alleged.

According to state Department of Corrections records, Joseph had previously been convicted of:

* methamphetamine possession in Payne County in 2016, for which he was given a six-month jail term followed by nine and one-half years of probation in 2017 that the prosecution is now seeking to revoke;
