(Stillwater, Okla.) — An ex-convict from Spencer, who reportedly told a Stillwater police officer he was selling methamphetamine “because it is quick and easy money,” has been given a 12-year prison term for trafficking 22.4 grams of the drug a year after he got out of prison.
Richard Lee Schaffer, 36, also known by the surname of Pollock, was sentenced as part of a plea bargain with the prosecution by District Judge Phillip Corley, who told him in court on March 10 that if he completed the Bill Johnson Drug Offender Work Camp, the balance of his term could be suspended.
Schaffer was arrested at 5:37 pm on Sept. 6, 2022, by Stillwater Police Officer Josh Carson, who recognized Schaffer walking in the 1900 block of E. 3rd, an affidavit said.
“I have received information from numerous informants Richard has been actively selling methamphetamine around town,” the Stillwater officer wrote in his affidavit.
“Richard stated he was released from prison approximately a year ago,” the affidavit said.
When the officer noticed a large bulge in the right pocket of his jeans, “Richard stated, ‘You already known what that is,"” the affidavit said.
“Richard stated he was selling methamphetamine because it is quick and easy money,” the affidavit said.
According to the state Department of Corrections, Schaffer had been released from prison on Aug. 1, 2021, after serving about two and one-half years of two concurrent seven-year sentences in 2019 for two counts of second-degree burglary in Delaware County in 2017.
Schaffer also was sentenced to two concurrent 60-day prison terms for two counts of second-degree burglary in Payne County in 2018, followed by 1,766 days of probation. Schaffer also received two concurrent five-year probationary terms in 2019 for possessing methamphetamine and stolen property in 2016 in Payne County, DOC records show.
