…Winter storm watch remains in effect from Thursday morning through late Thursday night…
A winter storm watch remains in effect from Thursday morning through late Thursday night across Oklahoma and western north Texas.
* A strong winter storm will take aim on the southern plains Thursday into Friday. Cold air currently in place over western Canada will move over the region late Wednesday behind a strong cold front. A strong storm system will then approach from the west early Thursday…resulting in a variety of winter weather.
* Timing: the most likely time for hazardous winter weather will be from early Thursday morning through early Friday morning.
* Main impacts: freezing rain may begin to accumulate on power lines and elevated surfaces during the day Thursday. The most likely area for significant ice accumulations appears to be across portions of central and southern Oklahoma and parts of western north Texas. Sleet and snow accumulations appear more likely across central and northern Oklahoma although some freezing rain will also be possible across northern Oklahoma.
* Other impacts: gusty north and northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph will add additional stress to power lines that may have ice accumulations. Blowing and drifting of snow will also be possible.
Cushing Emergency Management Director Bob Noltensmeyer said, “Preparedness actions should include making sure you have plenty of food, water, and medication before the potential storm hits.” Noltensmeyer continued, “It is very important that neighbors be sure and check on the elderly in the event a significant winter does strike Cushing.”
A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow…sleet…or ice accumulations that may impact travel and commerce.
