(Drumright, Okla.) Hospitality abounded in Drumright Thursday as 850 Oklahoma Free Wheelers rolled into town. The bicyclists were welcomed with signs, loud hellos and even a mini health check from Central Tech students.
Drumright was just one of several overnight stops the Free Wheelers made as they traveled from Texas to Kansas. One rider from Broken Arrow said it was his 5th time to make the trek and that Drumright had been a stop the first time he participated. “The people here are so hospitable…a guy came by earlier in a van to let us know they will shuttle us to anywhere we want to go while we’re in town.”
Greg Roberts, Keystone Gas Corporation, said Central Tech trucks delivered the riders’ luggage in the morning and by 11 a.m. approximately 1/3 of the 850 had arrived.
“Tent cities are going up everywhere, ” Roberts told KUSH a little before noon. “Just about any flat piece of ground will have campers.” He also said the Baptist Church in Drumright had opened its doors for hot and tired bicyclists to shower and take respite.
It’s pretty exciting around here,” he continued. “We’ll be here all night – we’re happy they are here.”
This is the 34th year the Free Wheelers have traveled from the Texas border into Kansas.
