Dr. Thomas Richard Owens, Director of Missions, Cimarron Baptist Association, and pastor, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2008 in Tulsa at the age of 61 years.
The son of the late Howard Owens and Belle Losey Owens, Tom was born on July 18, 1947 in Cushing, OK and was reared and educated in Cushing and Konawa, graduating from Konawa High School in 1965. In 1969 he received his Bachelors Degree in Religion and History from Oklahoma Baptist University; he received his Masters Degree of Divinity in 1972 from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth and in 1984, Tom received his Doctor on Ministry Degree from Luther Rice Seminary.
He was united in marriage to Linda Johnson on June 30, 1967 and to this union two children, Daniel and Gayle were born.
Tom preached his first sermon at the First Baptist Church of Cushing, where he was saved, baptized and surrendered to the ministry. He pastored several Churches in Texas and Oklahoma, before becoming the Director of Missions for the Cimarron Baptist Association in 1990.
Dr. Owens was a member of the First Baptist Church of Drumright; he enjoyed computers, writing, shooting and reloading, spending time with his family and the many pastors associated with the Cimarron Association.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of the home; two children and spouses: Daniel and Becky Owens of Tulsa, OK and Gayle and Chad Yost of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren, Rylie Danielle and Ryane Rebecca Owens and Trevor Thomas Yost; one brother James Owens and wife Mary Lou of Mustang, OK; one sister Carol Allred and husband, Dr. Robert Allred of Killeen, TX, and a host of family and friends.
Services will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 2 P.M. in the First Baptist Church, Cushing, OK and officiated by Dr. Anthony Jordan, Executive Secretary of Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, Dr. Larry Wilson, pastor of Garnett Road Baptist Church in Tulsa and Reverend Robin Foster, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Perkins and moderator of Cimarron Baptist Association.
Tom had a passion for the association’s children’s camp, Camp Lela. Over the years he witnessed many children experience a fresh encounter with Christ. In lieu of flowers the family would like to ask for memorial contributions be made to Camp Lela through the Associational Office at 1244 East Main, Cushing, OK 74023.
