(Cushing, Okla.) The Cushing United Fund Drive is now underway. The annual drive raises funds for various agencies who serve the Cushing community. This year’s committee chair is Deana Floyd. Floyd recently spoke to Cushing Rotarians, as well as listeners of the Donna and Molly Show.
Floyd discussed the important work each of the agencies do for Cushing and how fortunate we are to have such a program that keeps monies in the community.
“Although some of the agencies may have a Stillwater address, their services are for people in Cushing,” Floyd said.
Floyd went on to give a brief description of what each of the agencies do.
American Red Cross: Provides training of water safety instructors, lifeguards, CPR and first aid instructor. They also provide aid to military personnel and their families. Provides meals, shelter and clothing during a disaster.
Cushing Care Clinic: They promote a healthy community by providing compassionate healthcare to the medically underserved. They provide a volunteer staff of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, social workers and other support personnel.
Cushing Ministerial Fellowship: This organization coordinates with other local agencies and churches to provide assistance for gathering food, providing medical needs and paying for utilities, etc.
Cushing Food Bank: This agency began in Cushing in 1989. They provide free food for needy families. Much of the food they receive is purchased from the Food Bank of Oklahoma City at a ver low price. Nobody is turned away. The Food Bank is completely staffed by volunteers and distributes approximately 15,000 – 18,000 pounds of food each month to serve 300 – 320 needy families in the Cushing area.
Judith Karman Hospice: Provides physical, emotional and spiritual home care for terminally ill patients and their families, focusing on pain control, dignity and quality of life. Bereavement support groups meet regularly and are open to the community.
Cimarron Council Boy Scouts: The Boy Scout program develops character, citizenship, fitness, and leadership skills through adventurous outdoor activities. They have programs for young men in grades 1 – 12.
Girl Scouts of Magic Empire Council: An informal education program to help girls deepen awareness oft heir self-worth, develop lifelong values, and make positive contributions to society. It is an organization that positively influences girls, enabling and empowering them to achieve their fullest potential.
Stillwater Domestic Violence Services: Provides a Safe shelter, individual and group counseling for victims, advocacy, education, sexual assault counseling, crisis line response, and treatment for batterers. The Shelter houses women from all walks of life, from single mother to favorite teachers to the person sitting next to you in church. Domestic violence does not discriminate. It can happen to anyone. LoveINC: A network of churches that links volunteers to people in need. It is a cooperative effort between churches and service agencies to provide effective help for the disadvantaged.
Oklahoma Food Bank Back Pack Program: Provides back pack of food to chronically hungry children in Cushing Public Schools. Each Friday the back pack, filled with food, is given to the child. The child then brings the back pack back on Monday so it can be refilled for the following Friday. Children enrolled in the program also receive an extra sack of food over extended school holidays, such as Christmas Break and Spring Break. Children with younger, age appropriate siblings at home are also given an extra food sack each week. The foods are nutritious and kid friendly.
