(Stillwater, Okla.) – A prison inmate – who reportedly had seizure-like symptoms after a bag of methamphetamine burst inside his body — was given a five-year prison term Friday for possessing the drug inside the Cimarron Correctional Facility in Cushing.
In court, Jason Scott Daniels, 39, who pleaded guilty to the charge, asked for a drug treatment program in prison, which District Judge Phillip Corley ordered on Friday.
As part of a plea bargain, Daniels was given $1,250 in fines and assessments, as well as ordered to comply with the Methamphetamine Registry.
For the past eight years, Daniels has been serving a 10-year sentence in the Cushing private prison for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Jackson County in 2006, state Department of Corrections records show.
On the request of the Cushing prison warden, state DOC Internal Affairs Agent Casey Hamilton conducted an investigation of the drug incident, court records show.
Daniels “was observed inside his cell with seizure-like symptoms,” on Jan. 13, 2014, Hamilton’s affidavit said.
“Following the arrival of medical staff, Daniels was moved to the medical unit,” where Daniels began to regurgitate three plastic bags believed to contain methamphetamine, the affidavit said.
“Daniels was transported to the Cushing Regional Hospital before being flown by helicopter to Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa,” the affidavit said.
The next day, the DOC agent interviewed Daniels at the Tulsa hospital, where he was told that Daniels had been medicated due to attempting to assault the correctional officers from the Cushing prison, the affidavit said.
“Daniels made the admission he had introduced contraband into the facility on six separate occasions; however, he stated the contraband was usually marijuana,” the affidavit said.
A criminalistics examination report from the state crime bureau showed “the plastic bags which were ingested and vomited by Daniels positively contained methamphetamine,” the affidavit said.
Two bags had been submitted for evaluation, while the other had burst inside Daniels, the affidavit said.
During a second interview with Daniels at the Cushing prison in February, “Daniels stated he was approached by another offender during visitation and asked to bring the bags into the facility in exchange for money.
“Daniels stated he does not remember the individual who approached him. Daniels also denied knowing who the contraband was intended for,” the affidavit said.
According to DOC records, Daniels previously served six and one-half years of a 10-year prison term for possessing a drug within 1,000 feet of a school in Tulsa County in 1995.
Daniels also served about three and one-half years of a five-year prison term for second-degree burglary, concealing stolen property, and uttering a forged instrument in Tulsa County in 1993, DOC records show.
Daniels also served three years of a five-year prison term for using a false name in a driver’s license application in Wagoner County in 1993, DOC records show.
