Monday morning (Dec. 21) Cushing police continue to investigate a series of pickup tailgate thefts. On most new pickups, this is a crime you can prevent by locking the tailgate.

Cushing police Chief Terry Brannon said, “This is not a crime that we have experienced with any frequency whatsoever, so this is something new that our citizens will be challenged with stopping just as we will. A pickup tailgate is expensive to replace so I can only sense the negative financial impact a theft like this will have on the unsuspecting victim. I cannot encourage our citizens enough to LOCK IT UP!”

Cushing police Detective Adam Harp offered the following sensible precautions:

Lock It up!

-An unlocked vehicle is an open invitation to a thief. Lock up when you leave your vehicle, and take the keys with you.

-Lock the trunk or tailgate.

-Close all windows — professional thieves have tools that unlock cars through the smallest openings.

-When you park the vehicle, remove cellular phones, iPods, MP3 players, and other valuable possessions. Do not leave gift-wrapped packages or cameras lying on the seat. Lock all valuables in your trunk or take them with you.

-Lock your vehicle even if you are making a quick stop at the gas station, convenience store, etc.

-At night, park in well-lit areas.

Anyone with information about these thefts is encouraged to call the police department at (918) 225-1212, and ask to speak with Detective Adam Harp.
