(Cushing, Okla.) – Thursday night just after 10:00 p.m., Cushing police Deputy Chief Tully Folden and Officer Matthew Piatt were on patrol in the downtown area when they saw a car parked in the alley behind a building owned by Current Electric, located in the 200 blk N. Cleveland Street. The car trunk was open and the lights were off.
When the officers checked the car, they encountered a 17 year old Cushing resident taking copper wire from the building. Initially, the juvenile was placed into investigative detention, but later arrested. The juvenile was taken to the police department where he was interviewed and processed on a number of charges, which included second degree burglary, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and possession of stolen copper wire.
At the time of the crimes occurrence, it was believed another person was involved and fled before being apprehended. Detective Adam Harp was able to identify the second person involved in the crime, which was another 17 year old Cushing resident. This juvenile was located and interviewed at the police department. Criminal charges being filed against this juvenile will be determined by the Payne County D.A.
The vehicle involved in the incident was impounded. During the inventory, Sgt. Mark Jobe and Deputy Chief Folden found drug paraphernalia and a substance believed to be marijuana inside the vehicle. Both items were seized as evidence. The substance believed to be marijuana will be submitted to the O.S.B.I. for further analysis.
“I want to commend Deputy Chief Folden and Officer Piatt for a job well done, and for their initial discovery of this crime during its occurrence,” said Chief Terry Brannon. “Detective Harp, Sgt. Mark Jobe and MPO Randy Evans did a good job helping with the investigation last night,” he said. “When this crime was initially broadcast, we were busy working another incident and had additional officer’s on-duty, which was a saving grace for us because it allowed us to handle this incident without delaying the help Deputy Chief Folden and Officer Piatt needed in that moment,” said Brannon.
Both juveniles were ordered released to their parents earlier this morning.
This was the second time police have made an arrest connected to the burglary of this particular business. In early April, two other persons were charged in connection with burglarizing this business and stealing copper. Police have made no connection between the juveniles involved in last night’s burglary and the adults arrested in early April.
