(Cushing, Okla) Jim Pickard, President of the local Lions Club International, called the meeting to order today at 12:27 p.m. The agenda started with song and pledge by Lion Jerry Snider. This was followed by prayer requests for local families along with prayer by Rev. Kathleen Leithner.
Lions Club then introduced weekly guests followed by special guest speaker newly elected District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas. Thomas has been serving the citizens of Payne and Logan Counties for many years as an assistant District Attorney, prosecuting criminal cases as well as juvenile deprived and delinquent cases. She said she has pursued many different challenges including management and administration, transferring to the District Attorney’s Child Support Division in Stillwater. Thomas’ experience led her to become a leader in the felony prosecution of parents refusing to pay their child support. She also supervised the opening of the Guthrie child support office making access to child support services more convenient for those in Logan County. Recently, Thomas sought to learn what type of items child support offices are in need of. Personal hygiene products, such as combs, hair clips, brushes, etc., were high on the priority list. Thomas also touched briefly on the topic of Food Stamps and TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families).
Lions Club then held the 50/50 drawing with today’s winner donating her winnings back to the club.
The meeting adjourned around 1:00 (pm).
Cushing Lions Club meets each Tuesday at noon in the Lions Den in downtown Cushing.
