Festival in the Park’s HOTTEST EVENT Saturday was the Cushing Lion’s Club sponsored “CHILI COOK-OFF” at Memorial Park in Cushing. Whether it was Hot & Spicy, Hot & Sweet or any combination of flavors, about a dozen booths competed for prize money and trophies judged for BEST CHILI, BEST DECORATED BOOTH and the popular PEOPLE’S CHOICE for BEST CHILI.
Entrants from individuals, corporations and church groups brought their secret chili recipes which were judged in blind taste-testing by judges MARILYN DUFF, MAYOR JOHN HENCKEL and PRISCILLA SMITH.
Judged “BEST CHILI” was individual entrant, DANNY DAVIS. Davis’ sweet and smoky recipe won him prize money of $125.00 and a trophy. 2nd place $75.00 prize money and trophy went to the Father and Son team of DAVID & COREY REID from CUSHING CITIZEN newspaper. Their recipe had a tasty kick and brought folks back asking for more. 3rd place prize money of $50.00 and trophy went to the ‘Boomer Sooner’ hint-of-smoke chili of the JUSTIN GOAD of FALCO ALARM COMPANY.
CUSHING VALLEY HOPE’s recipe was voted BEST CHILI in the popular PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD, and the hard working team also won BEST DECORATED BOOTH for the event, with trophies and prize money of $125.00 awarded to their representatives DANA FISHER and JOYCE WILLARD. HILLTOP GREENHOUSE’s PRESTON FAMILY came in 2nd for their Harvest Booth Decoration and 3rd place went to the FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH’s YOUNG ADULT GROUP with their eye-catching Angels and Devils theme.
