(Stillwater, Okla.) – A Coyle man, who has been accused of grabbing his sister by the throat and repeatedly punching her, appeared before a judge by video from the Payne County Jail this week on a felony charge of domestic violence as a subsequent offense.

If convicted of his latest charge, John Shannon Hodges, 47, who was already on probation for firearms and drug convictions, could receive as much as a four-year prison term. Hodges remains held on $7,500 bail pending a May 16 preliminary hearing.

Hodges was arrested at 12:33 a.m. on Feb. 24 at his rural Coyle residence by Payne County Sheriff’s Deputy Korey Carruba, who was sent there shortly before midnight on a domestic call, according to his affidavit.

Hodges’ sister was sitting in her pick-up truck when she told the deputy that Hodges “had grabbed her by the throat while she was driving back from the bar to their residence,” the affidavit alleged.

“She advised that he had punched her in the face and she was trying to reason with him to get him to leave the residence,” the deputy’s affidavit alleged.

The deputy could see injuries to the woman’s face near her left eye, the affidavit alleged.

Hodges’ sister “stated that he had come out to the truck before I arrived and tried to get in and then went back to the residence,” the deputy alleged in his affidavit.

With Hodges’ sister’s permission and keys to the house, the deputy went inside and found Hodges lying on a pile of clothing in the bedroom closet, the affidavit alleged. Hodges smelled of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech, the affidavit alleged.

Hodges “had injuries to his forehead, face and scratches on his neck area…he advised that he had got into a fight with his sister and that she had hit him,” according to the affidavit of the deputy, who told Hodges he was under arrest for domestic assault and battery.

The roommate of Hodges’ sister said that she had witnessed the incident, the affidavit alleged.

“She advised in her statement that John (Hodges) had punched (his sister) about 20 times in the body,” the affidavit alleged.

LifeNet ambulance transported Hodges’ sister to the Stillwater Medical Center for evaluation of her injuries, which included marks on the right side of her neck and her right forearm, along with a bruise on her left forearm where she said she was bitten, the affidavit alleged.

Hodges was taken to the Payne County Jail where he was evaluated by jail medical staff for his injuries, the affidavit said.

“He advised that he wanted to file charges on his sister,” according to the affidavit, but court records show that she has not been charged in the incident.

According to court records and the state Department of Corrections, Hodges, who formerly lived in Stroud, was previously convicted of:

* cultivation of a drug in 2013 in Lincoln County for which he was given a 10-year prison term in 2016, with the balance suspended on his completion of a drug treatment program in custody, along with a concurrent one-year jail term for domestic assault and battery, and was released in June 2017 to probation;

* cultivation of a drug and possession of a firearm after a conviction or during probation, both in 2015 in Lincoln County for which he was given prison terms concurrent to his above sentence and released in June 2017 to probation.
