(Cushing, Okla) Corporation Commissioner Dana Murphy spoke last night to small oil and gas producers in the area. The meeting was held at the Steer Inn Restaurant (Cushing) it was about 2.5 hours in length.
Some of the main topics Murphy talked about: notice of hydraulic fracturing operations: at least 48 hours before operations begin. New rules going into effect September 12 (2014). The difference in results from horizontal drilling vs. vertical drilling.
The meeting was followed by a short question and answer session. Where one of the main concerns that was continually voiced was horizontal drilling in close proximity to vertical drilling “or” a vertical well. Some of the oil and gas producers have seen a reduction in production “or” in worst case scenarios the vertical wells were affected by horizontal wells in close proximity.
Fracturing of vertical wells was first invented in 1947 by Stanolind Oil and Gas Corporation. Recently horizontal well technology combined with state of the art fracing has been controversial.
The Corporation Commission is currently developing and adapting their rules to accommodate both vertical and horizontal operations for the future. Dana Murphy invited operators in attendance to take part in the rule making process.
