(Stillwater, Okla.) – A convict who told an investigator he might have dementia since he has received multiple head injuries from previous fights was given an additional two-year prison term Friday for attacking a Cushing prison guard with a handmade weapon called a shank.

Aaron E. Eyob, 29, was transferred from the Cimarron Correctional Facility to Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester after the attack on the Cushing prison guard, state Department of Corrections records show.

A Cushing prison guard told Cushing Police Officer Aaron Sherman on March 13 he was attacked while he was conducting a count in his pod and opening doors for inmates to throw out their laundry, an affidavit said.

The guard said “after he opened Aaron’s door, Aaron stood in the door, staring at him,” the affidavit said.

The guard said “before he could close the door, Aaron began attacking him with a shank (handmade pointed weapon),” the affidavit said.

The guard said that “while Aaron was striking him, Aaron kept repeatedly yelling ‘F… you,’” the affidavit said.

The guard said he had multiple lacerations on his head, neck and right arm – and received four stitches on the left side of his head along with 11 stitches on the right side of his head, the affidavit said.

Cimarron Correctional Investigator Joseph Sebenick said that Eyob told him that he had no problems with the guard, the affidavit said.

Sebenick said “Aaron stated he has received multiple head injuries from previous fights and Aaron thinks he might have dementia,” the affidavit said.

Sebenick said “Aaron stated he has stopped taking his psych medication because it was making him feel weird and causing him to lose weight,” the affidavit said.

Sebenick said “Aaron stated he had the shank in his cell for about two weeks, but would not say how or where he obtained it from,” the affidavit said.

Eyob has been incarcerated for a year on a five-year prison sentence, to be followed by 10 years of probation, for possession of a firearm and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute in Oklahoma County in 2013, state Department of Corrections records show.

Eyob has also been serving a concurrent five-year prison term, to be followed by five years of probation, for possession of marijuana in Payne County in 2013, court records show.

After he completes those sentences, Eyob will begin serving his two-year prison term for attacking the Cushing prison guard and having a shank in the penal facility.

Eyob previously had been convicted of assault and battery on an emergency medical technician in 2011 in Tulsa County, for which he was given a four-year prison term of which he served less than half, DOC records show.

Eyob also was convicted of second-degree burglary and grand larceny in 2009 in Tulsa County, for which he was given a two-year prison term, of which he served about one year followed by probation for one year, DOC records show.
